At the age of 13, Camargo fell under the wing of his first coach and mentor, Bill “Coach Mac” McDaniel. Previously a gymnast, Camargo quickly caught on to the swift, powerful movements of the Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Almost immediately, he stopped other sports to commit his time exclusively to Olympic Weightlifting. Within three years, Camargo earned a position at the United States Olympic Training Center as a resident athlete where he was able to train as an Olympic hopeful while finishing high school. His weightlifting career included three Jr. National Championship titles, several Junior American Records, and positions on numerous international teams representing Team USA overseas. At 21 years old and weighing 83kg (182.6lbs.) in his final competition year, Camargo lifted a 152.5kg (334lbs) Snatch and 180kg (396lbs) in the Clean & Jerk, a Junior American Record. Camargo retired while on top of the Junior division and began coaching. Assisting head coaches at local high schools, Camargo continued his education earning himself a Bachelor of Arts Degree. In 2001, after helping local coaches for 2 years, he decided he was ready to lead his own team and started a new program in Altamonte Springs, FL. With only a few athletes, he and the team made a name for themselves. Now with over 40 athletes, Camargo continues to produce well-rounded weightlifters. In his 8th year of coaching Olympic Weightlifting, Camargo has produced three Jr. National Champions, elevated four athletes to Team USA’s Junior Group, had two athletes selected as resident athletes at the United States Olympic Training Center, had two athletes receive weightlifting college scholarships and had two athletes qualify and compete at the prestigious Jr. World Championships. Camargo’s team, Altamonte Weightlifting, also placed 2nd in the 2007 Jr. National Championships and produced a 2007 American Open Champion. Camargo considers himself a “student of his sport,” continuously studying and teaching others. His experience as an international athlete and elite national coach earned him a selection as a coach on the 2006 Jr. Pan American Team, held in Ecuador. That team returned to the States with countless medals and athlete’s earning personal bests. Currently, Camargo is a Regional Coach and is expected to earn his International Coach status at the end of the year [one step below the highest level of coaching in USA Weightlifting]. Camargo coaches children 10 years old, juniors under 20 years, collegiate athletes and adults. His athlete production and achievement are a testament to his vast knowledge in Olympic Weightlifting.
